Use gadgets like a citrus juicer
Gadgets like citrus juicer, citrus squeezer, or wooden reamer help you. But I highly recommend citrus juicer – especially when you squeeze citrus fruits a lot. Cheap, easy to use, and clean – I think it’s one of the best kitchen tools ever. Amazing! Citrus squeezer is a bit hard because it definitely requires your muscles a bit.
Roll it against the cutting board
Push and roll the lime against the cutting board before you cut it. It’s easier to get at the juice.
Microwave
Warming up citrus fruits to reach room temperature before juicing will significantly increase the juice yield. If you refrigerate fruit, set it out for at least 30 minutes. Microwave accelerates it. 20 seconds on high. After microwaving, let it cool for a minute before juicing.
Fork
Twist the citrus segment around a fork. But the above 3 methods should solve the problem.
How much juice is in citrus fruit?
Every piece of fruit holds a different amount of juice and factors such as size, growing environment, and variety will impact how much juice citrus will hold.
On average, you can expect to get:
- 1 lemon = 3 tablespoons or 1 3/4 oz
- 1 lime = 1 tablespoon or 1/2 to 1 oz
- 1 orange = 1/4 cup or 2 to 3 oz
- 1 grapefruit = 3/4 cup or 5 to 6 oz
Wash Your Hands & Avoid Sun
The acids of citrus juices could irritate your skin. If your hands have cuts or rough skin, wash your hands often during and after juicing. If you’re very sensitive, wear gloves.
This is especially important when you’re in the sun. If citrus juice remains on your skin and you’re exposed to direct sunlight, you can get a most severe sunburn ( phytophotodermatitis or “margarita dermatitis”). It’s often associated with making Margaritas in summer. If you’re mixing drinks outside or go outside after mixing, wash your hands.
How to store lime
Though it’s pretty to put limes in a bowl on the kitchen counter, it’s the worst way to store citrus. Limes left out at room temperature will gradually lose their moisture and their rinds will become hard.
Most citrus juice can be stored for a few weeks, though you will find it best if used within a few days.
To preserve the juice the limes do have,
- place them in the refrigerator.
- choose glass containers with tight-sealing lids. Plastic breaks down and is never a good idea for long-term or reusable storage of any fresh mixer.
